Shy Katie moves in with enthusiastic Uncle Mark and gets an unexpected new friend, a puppy named Rascal. But when Katie turns up to puppy class and discovers it’s taught in te reo Māori, panic sets in.

Katie and Rascal’s first puppy lesson is a disaster; Rascal refuses to listen and Katie struggles with her reo. Embarrassed and ready to quit, Katie must decide whether she’s brave enough to stay and try.

When Katie freezes up in puppy class, Whaea Kaz gives her space to practice without an audience, But just as Katie’s confidence grows, she learns the final test will be performed in front of friends and whānau. Her worst nightmare!

With the big test looming, Katie and Rascal begin to work as a team and new commands finally stick. Uncle Mark embarks on his own reo journey, doing his best to make their little household feel like whānau… even when things don’t go perfectly.

When Rascal struggles with a new command, Katie worries she’s not a very good dog owner. With Whaea Kaz’s help, she learns she’s not an owner, but a guardian, and finally connects with Uncle Mark in a big way.
