Whakaata Māori provides free-to-air broadcast services and digital platforms that allow users to access Māori Television content online and on demand. These Terms of Use govern your access to and use of Whakaata Māori Platforms.
By accessing or using Whakaata Māori Platforms, you agree to be bound by these Terms of Use and all applicable laws of Aotearoa New Zealand. If you do not agree, you must not use the platforms.
1. Definitions
In these Terms of Use:
a. Whakaata Māori, we, us, or our means Māori Television Service and its related entities.
b. Whakaata Māori Platforms means all websites, applications, streaming services, and digital platforms owned or operated by Whakaata Māori.
c. Content means all audio-visual material, programmes, livestreams, text, images, graphics, and other material made available on Whakaata Māori Platforms.
d. You or user means any person accessing or using Whakaata Māori Platforms.
2. Eligibility and accounts
You may create an account or use certain features of Whakaata Māori Platforms only if:
a. You are at least 13 years of age
b. You provide accurate and current information
If you are under 18, you must confirm that you have permission from a parent or legal guardian, and that they agree to these Terms on your behalf.
You are responsible for maintaining the security and confidentiality of your account login details and for all activity that occurs under your account. You must notify us promptly if you believe your account has been accessed without authorisation.
3. Use of Whakaata Māori Platforms

c. Introduce malicious code, viruses, or harmful material
d. Infringe intellectual property or privacy rights
e. Use the platforms in a way that is unlawful, harmful, misleading, defamatory or offensive
4. Content and availability
Whakaata Māori Platforms provide access to broadcast and on-demand Content, which may change from time to time.
We do not guarantee that:
a. Any particular Content will be available at all times
b. Content will be uninterrupted, error-free, or available in all locations
c. On-demand programmes will remain available for a specific period
Some Content may include viewer guidance or classification information. Parents and guardians are encouraged to actively supervise the viewing choices of children and young people.
5. Intellectual property
All Content and materials on Whakaata Māori Platforms are protected by copyright and other intellectual property laws.
Unless expressly permitted by law or by us in writing, you must not:
a. Copy, reproduce, distribute, transmit, broadcast, modify, or publicly display Content
b. Download or store Content for commercial purposes
c. Remove or alter any copyright or proprietary notices
You may view Content and, where functionality allows, download or print limited extracts solely for private, personal use. For example, downloading worksheets associated with our language learning shows.
6. Third-party services and links
Whakaata Māori Platforms may contain links to third-party websites, applications, services, or content.
We do not control and are not responsible for third-party platforms, their content, or their practices.
We do not endorse what may be said or displayed on third-party platforms and do not guarantee its reliability in this respect.
Your use of third-party services is subject to their own terms and privacy policies.
7. Privacy
Personal information collected through Whakaata Māori Platforms is handled in accordance with our Privacy Policy, which forms part of these Terms of Use.
8. Suspension and termination
We may suspend or terminate access to Whakaata Māori Platforms, or close user accounts, where:
a. These Terms are breached
b. Use is unlawful or harmful
c. Required for legal, safety, or operational reasons
d. Or otherwise at the sole discretion of Whakaata Māori
Where practicable, we will provide reasonable notice. Immediate suspension or termination may occur where necessary to protect users, Whakaata Māori, or third parties.
You may stop using Whakaata Māori Platforms or request the closure of your account at any time.
9. Liability
To the extent permitted by law:
a. Your use of Whakaata Māori Platforms is at your own risk
b. We do not guarantee that platforms or Content will be uninterrupted, secure, or error-free
We are not reliable in any way whatsoever for any loss arising from your use of Whakaata Māori platforms, whether such losses are direct, indirect or consequential losses.
10. Indemnity
You agree to indemnify Whakaata Māori against losses, damages, costs and claims arising directly from your breach of these Terms, unlawful conduct, or misuse of Whakaata Māori Platforms or indirectly in any way whatsoever.
11. Changes to these Terms
We may update these Terms of Use from time to time. Material changes will be published on Whakaata Māori Platforms and may be notified to registered users.
Continued use of Whakaata Māori Platforms after changes take effect constitutes acceptance of the updated Terms.
12. Governing law
These Terms of Use are governed by the laws of Aotearoa New Zealand. You submit to the exclusive jurisdiction of the New Zealand courts for any disputes arising from or relating to your use of Whakaata Māori Platforms.
